Debrecen’s higher education has a long history that extends to the sixteenth century. The Reformed College of Debrecen, founded in 1538, was instrumental in promoting Hungarian culture throughout the country and the region by educating in the language of the people. A large number of writers, scientists, and politicians received their education at the College, which quickly rose to become the most significant cultural hub in the entire nation. By 2020, the University of Debrecen hopes to maintain its position as the top institution of higher learning in Hungary while also integrating research, education, health care, and agricultural activities. It also hopes to achieve an international ranking in the top half under both “Programs” and “Institutions”. The school supports the labour market and satisfies the educational needs of the socioeconomic variables in the area by offering a portfolio of educational offerings that are in line with market expectations. The University of Debrecen has been successful in drawing the most international students of any Hungarian higher education institution thanks to a wide range of English language degree programmes and an education of exceptional quality. The university continues to be a prominent participant in the global scientific community and has forged alliances with key players in the innovation economy. Its research and development activities has consistently increased and excelled when compared to other institutions nationally as evidenced by publications, citations, and income from research grants. Focus areas have been chosen for their multidisciplinary approach and include molecular science, physical, computational, and material science, molecular medicine, medical, health, environmental, and agricultural science, as well as languages, culture, and bioethics. In anticipation of demographic and global developments, these focal areas seek to offer solutions to the socio-economic-scientific problems that are emerging in the Human-Health-Environment sectors. The University of Debrecen places a high premium on supporting students’ scientific endeavours, and its most talented graduates are encouraged to start their scientific careers there.
