One of the top medical universities in the world is the Karolinska Institute, which has its headquarters in Stockholm, Sweden. Its mission is to advance human health via research and instruction. The university, which enrols about 6,000 students, lies nearby Karolinska University Hospital. The research conducted at the Karolinska Institute covers the entire spectrum of medicine, from fundamental experimental work to patient-centered and nursing research. The organisation is Sweden’s largest academic medical research organisation as a whole. King Karl XIII established the Karolinska Institute in 1810 as a school for the education of surgeons after learning that one third of the injured in a battle against Russia perished in field hospitals. The college received permission to award degrees in 1861, elevating it to university rank. The authority to choose the recipient of the Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine was left to the Karolinska Institute by Alfred Nobel in his will from 1895. Five researchers from the Karolinska Institute have since received a Nobel Prize in that field. The organisation received full university status in 1997. Two campuses of the institution can be found in the northwest and south of Stockholm, respectively, at KI Campus Solna and KI Campus Huddinge. From the city’s centre, both campuses are a 10- to 15-minute walk or train trip away. The Karolinska Institute also grants doctoral degrees in addition to bachelor’s and master’s degrees. Students who want to pursue a PhD must acquire cutting-edge scientific expertise in the study area they choose for their thesis as well as an advanced general knowledge of medical science and scientific methods.
