Public university Stockholm University was established in 1878 and is situated in and around Stockholm. The main campus of the Swedish university is located in the Royal National City Park, close to the north of Stockholm’s downtown. Both Kista Science City and central Stockholm are home to the university’s facilities. International students from nations outside of the European Union and European Economic Area often pay tuition, as opposed to students from the European Union and European Economic Area countries plus Switzerland. Except for a few exchange and scholarship students, Stockholm University does not offer housing for students. Studies in the humanities, law, social sciences, math and physics, chemistry, biology, and earth and environmental sciences are available through the university’s several departments and centres. An academic calendar based on semesters is used at Stockholm University. In the university’s classrooms, both Swedish and English are spoken; many bachelor’s degree programmes and about 75 master’s degree programmes are entirely taught in English. Programs in management studies, Middle Eastern studies, and banking and finance are available through the English-taught master’s programme. International and exchange students can also take classes in Swedish. The institution has collaborations in research and exchange with universities all around the world, including the American University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The Baltic Sea Centre, which specialises in marine research and instruction, is one of Stockholm University’s several research facilities and labs. The facility has a ship that can be utilised for at-sea research as well as the Askö Laboratory in the archipelago south of Stockholm.
