Affordable Education

Another of the benefits of studying in Bulgaria is the affordable education. The fees at Bulgarian universities are comprehensive. They are not necessarily based on nationality, rather on the language and admission to the program. Bulgarian-taught programs are most affordable. But for those, well, you have to be able to speak Bulgarian. Most universities offer a preparatory language year for international students. Students who prefer to study in English face a higher cost of tuition. For example, the degrees in Human Medicine are 8 000 € for all students enrolled in the English-language program, regardless of their nationality. The degree is not cheap, that is for sure. But put in perspective with the cost of similar degrees in other countries, it is quite affordable. Finally, the tuition is only one part of the equation. The living expenses contribute considerably to the the total cost of attendance of a university. In Bulgaria you can enjoy great quality of life at relatively low cost of living. For example, shared university accommodation can cost as low as 35 € per month (and that includes utilities).

For me, the most rewarding experience of a study abroad is the opportunity to make friends with people from a different culture. Choosing Bulgaria means that you will be immersed in an international environment. Bulgarian medical schools attract students from the entire world. Greece, Germany and United Kingdom are the top three most represented nationalities, but you will have fellow students from everywhere. Soon you will be saying “Tack” to your Swedish friends or making plans to visit your Mongolian friends over the summer. Bulgaria has mile long beaches to discover Equally important, you can get to know the local culture and language. Comprehensive Admission

The admission in Bulgaria is well-regulated. There are formal requirements to be considered for admission. The good news is that A*s are not required for admission to Bulgarian medical schools. Instead, you need to have what is considered passing grades, namely 62% or better in Biology and Chemistry. The medical schools conduct entry examinations in Biology and Chemistry. The grades from the entrance examinations are weighted much higher than the high school grade in Biology and Chemistry. In effect, the available study places are distributed among students who performed well on the entrance examinations. In contrast to countries with GPA-based admission, the competition for a place in Bulgarian medical schools is much lower.

Accessibility to the European Labor Market

Studying in Bulgaria means you can benefit from the European labor market regulations as well. For instance, you are allowed to work while you study. This makes it possible to do paid internships and gain practical experience even before your practical year. In addition, you can also work in order to support some of your living expenses. After graduation, you have the right to stay and look for a job for at least 9 months. This gives you the benefit that you can apply for residency after graduation. In addition, one of the major benefits of studying in Bulgaria, if your goal is a medical career in the EU, is the recognition of the degree. A medical doctor is a regulated profession. It does not enjoy the third-country mobility laws within the EU. Each EU member state checks the qualifications regardless of whether the individual enjoys intra-EU mobility.
