The Spanish government established the Autonomous Institution of Madrid (AUM) as a public university in 1968. The university, which is located on a remote campus but is connected to Madrid by commuter rail, is known for its outstanding academic and research programmes. AUM is frequently regarded as one of Spain’s best institutions of higher learning; it consistently ranks among the top universities in Spain as well as well across Europe and internationally. Eight faculties make up the institution, and inside each one are various departments with specialised areas of study. About 60 departments at AUM provide PhD-level studies in addition to undergraduate and postgraduate degrees. The university also has eight research institutions that encourage experts in their specialties to network and work together on cutting-edge ideas. The primary campus is located in the Cantoblanco neighbourhood outside of Madrid. The territory, which spans many square kilometres and includes parkland, academic buildings, and sports and recreation facilities, was intended to be a self-contained student metropolis. Currently, the campus has 16 cafes and canteens, indoor and outdoor pools, a private medical facility, sports fields, and beach volleyball courts. It also has a train station and bus services that connect it to the city centre of Madrid. Several former government ministers, Gaspar Llamazares, a former leader of the United Left Party, and none other than HM King Felipe VI of Spain, who received a law degree and took economics courses, are just a few of the school’s well-known alumni.
