The first students at Democritus University of Thrace (DUTH) enrolled in the department of law and the department of civil engineering in 1974 after the university was founded in July 1973. Democritus, a pre-Socratic Greek philosopher who was born in the city of Avdira, inspired the name of the place. He is most well-known today for developing the atomic theory of matter. Two faculties and 20 departments are located in four Thracian cities: nine in Komotini, five in Xanthi, four in Alexandroupoli, and two in Orestiada. Its centre is centred in Komotini, Greece. There are eight schools, including the schools of humanities, engineering, law, agricultural and educational sciences, economic and social sciences, health sciences, and physical education and sport sciences, which collectively cover 18 departments. There are roughly 30,000 students total, including 18,000 undergraduates. 600 people work in research and teaching, plus another 300 work in administration. Northeastern Greece’s Komotini, where the Democritus University of Thrace is located, is home to a sizable Turkish-speaking Muslim minority. Komotini is part of the East Macedonia and Thrace area. It is a significant administrative, financial, and cultural hub in northeastern Greece as well as one of the region’s primary administrative, financial, and cultural hubs. Komotini is home to thousands of Greek and international students thanks to the Democritus University, and this fact, together with the city’s diverse blend of Western and Oriental features of daily life, makes it an increasingly popular tourist destination.
