The Hellenic Open University was established in Patras, Greece, in 1992, and was modelled after the British Open University. It is the only university in the nation that offers distance learning. The university is divided into four schools: humanities, science and technology, social sciences, and applied arts. These schools provide courses at the undergraduate, graduate, and PhD levels. While the other three schools offer both undergraduate and graduate degrees, the School of Applied Arts solely confers postgraduate degrees. A variety of short courses are also available; they last about 400 hours total over 30 weeks. There are classes on waste management, biomimetics, natural disasters in the context of climate change, and software development. An estimated 30,000 students are enrolled each year, and 2,000 lecturers, professors, researchers, laboratory support staff, and instructors provide instruction to them. A select few scholarships are available from the Hellenic Open University in recognition of and reward for academic success. In collaboration with the University of Nicosia, the Open University of Cyprus, and the Wroclaw University of Economics, the institution offers joint postgraduate degrees.
