The School for Training Mining Officers was founded in 1735, which marks the beginning of the University of Sopron’s history. The institution changed its name to the Hungarian Royal Mining and Forestry College in 1904. Thirty years later, the college became a part of the Faculty of Mining, Metallurgy, and Forestry of the Royal József Nádor University of Technology and Economics in Hungary. The University of Sopron became the new name of the institution in 1996. The institution is situated in Sopron, a city in western Hungary, as its name would imply. The university has four faculties: Simonyi Karoly Faculty of Engineering, Wood Sciences and Applied Arts; Benedek Elek Faculty of Pedagogy; Alexander Lamfalussy Faculty of Economics; and faculty of forestry. Only three undergraduate degree programmes are now available at the university: a BA in international business economics, a BA in tourism and catering, and a BSc in timber and industry. Postgraduate students can choose from five master’s programmes: an MA in international business and economics, an MA in scientific teaching, an MSc in environmental engineering, an MSc in nature conservation engineering, and an MSc in the timber industry. There are three doctoral programmes available for individuals wishing to advance their education: PhD in management and organisation sciences, PhD in wood sciences and technologies, and PhD in forestry and wildlife management.
