The Regent of Spain, Cardinal Cisneros, established the University of Alcalá in 1499 as an entirely new educational endeavour. It merged the most effective examples of that era’s traditions—Paris and Salamanca—with other, more avant-garde examples, including the universities of Bologna and Louvain. Cardinal Cisneros wanted this university, which was founded at the same time as the modern age as the Spanish vanguard of the Renaissance and humanist thought in Europe, to be the training ground for the new competent government officials that the kingdoms of Spain needed, as well as for the regular and secular clergy. Alcalá became the home of a university aristocracy as a result of the success of this project, which Spain’s Golden Age possible. The Institution of Alcalá is a public university dedicated to excellence in teaching and research, which it achieves through attracting and keeping talent and by adjusting its educational programmes to social change and demands. The promotion of student employability, the adoption of socially responsible policies that enhance its standing as an inclusive, committed, and open institution, and the creation of effective, accountable, and transparent management based on its accountability to both the institution and society are among its top priorities. The objective of the university is to provide students with a thorough education and to foster their personal and professional growth via excellent instruction, the creation and dissemination of information, and the promotion of science and culture. By providing top-notch instruction, outstanding research, and the encouragement of moral and socially conscious behaviour, we hope to become a preeminent institution on the global stage that is dedicated to society, open to all, and committed to the development of citizens.
