The University of the Balearic Islands was established in 1978 in Palma on the island of Majorca (Universitat de les Illes Balears in Catalan or Universidad de las Islas Baleares in Spanish). Its founding dates back to 1483, when Ramon Llull, a philosopher and writer, inspired King Ferdinand II of Aragon to establish the Estudi General Lullià. The university campus, which is situated in a rural area between the neighbourhoods of Son Espanyol and Sa Garriga, is connected to the city of Palma by the Palma de Mallorca Metro. It covers a total area of roughly 100 hectares, of which 52 will be used as a natural reserve as part of the upcoming construction plan. The slopes of the Sierra de Tramuntan, which was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2010, run along the campus’ northern boundary. In a multiethnic and multilingual society, the student body communicates in Catalan, Spanish, and English. There are nine faculties at the university, which has been supported by the government of the Balearic Islands since 1996. They are the faculties of economics and enterprise, education, law, medicine, nursing, and physiotherapy, as well as the faculties of philosophy and the arts, psychology, science, and tourism. Also available are technical architecture, computer engineering, technical engineering, telecommunications engineering, specialty telematics, industrial engineering, specialty industrial electronics, and mathematics at Higher Polytechnic School.
